Spoiler-freePhilippe narrates from adulthood while reconstructing his relationship with Thomas in 1984. At seventeen he is a slim, bookish student marked as different and expected to leave Barbezieux through education.
As a teenager he wants Thomas to acknowledge and continue their love. As an adult he wants to understand what happened and preserve it through language.
