Spoiler-freeChifoilisk is a physicist from Thu, A-Io’s authoritarian socialist rival. He warns Shevek that A-Io’s university and government intend to buy his loyalty and keep his discovery. Chifoilisk is perceptive about A-Io but remains committed to another state that also claims ownership over science and people. After officials become suspicious of him, he leaves the university and returns toward Thu. His later fate is not given.
