Sabul

Sabul is the senior physicist who controls much of Anarres’s contact with Urrasti science. He presents himself as a mentor but attaches his name to Shevek’s work, delays publication, and uses access to foreign research as power. Sabul fears losing authority more than he values open inquiry. The Syndicate of Initiative eventually bypasses his monopoly, although the novel does not narrate a dramatic punishment or conversion. He remains an example of hierarchy recreated inside an anti-hierarchical culture.
