Vea Doem Oiie

Vea is Oiie’s socially sophisticated sister and one of the few upper-class Urrasti women Shevek is allowed to know. She understands how women use beauty and indirect influence in a society that formally excludes them from power. At a party, Shevek becomes drunk and sexually aggressive toward her, continuing after she resists. Vea escapes the encounter. The narrative does not follow her afterward, and readers should not reduce the scene to a lesson only about Shevek’s embarrassment.
