For Le Train Bleu, the ballet about fashionable people on the Riviera that Diaghilev premiered at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées on 20 June 1924, Chanel dressed the dancers in her own jersey sportswear — bathing suits, golf clothes, pearls — while Picasso supplied the painted front cloth, Cocteau the scenario, Milhaud the score and Nijinska the choreography. It is the first time a working couturier designed a ballet's costumes as the clothes of the moment rather than as theatrical dress.
