Dior hired Saint Laurent, then nineteen, into the studio at 30 avenue Montaigne in June 1955 after Michel de Brunhoff of French Vogue sent him round with about fifty sketches, and said of him that he was 'young, but an immense talent' and the father of thirty-four of the 180 designs in his last collection. When Dior died on 24 October 1957 the house named Saint Laurent his successor, at twenty-one, by Dior's own wish.
