Claudel's first teacher, the sculptor Alfred Boucher, left for Florence in 1882 after winning a gold medal at the Salon des Artistes Français and convinced Rodin to take over her instruction. She was eighteen; he was twenty-four years her senior and an established sculptor. She then worked in his studio for roughly ten years.
