Yvonne imagines a home in the Canadian wilderness where they can live quietly, work, and begin again. The dream is specific enough to feel possible, but it also lets her postpone the harder question of whether Geoffrey can stop drinking and whether love can overcome the damage between them.
Her past relationships with Hugh and Laruelle remain inside the marriage. Yvonne accepts guilt for hurting Geoffrey, yet she cannot make that history disappear. During the final day she moves between hope, fear, patience, and growing recognition that Geoffrey may refuse every offered future.
