Verne came to Paris to read law and found the literary salons instead, where he met Dumas — by then the most successful writer in France. Dumas introduced him into literary circles, and Verne's first play, Les Pailles rompues, reached the stage in 1850 through him. Verne was twenty-two; the Hetzel contract that made his career was still twelve years away.
