Paris travel guide
Where to Stay near the Opéra
Book beside the Palais Garnier, at InterContinental Paris Le Grand or the Hôtel Scribe, for opera nights and the department stores. Choose Kimpton St Honoré Paris, Hôtel Hana, Maison Albar - Le Vendôme or La Fantaisie if you want a pool, and Hôtel de Nell or Hôtel Adèle & Jules for a quiet side street at the eastern end of the area.
See the hotels ↓What staying near the Opéra is like
The area runs from the Palais Garnier, the Paris opera house inaugurated in 1875, east along boulevard des Capucines and boulevard des Italiens to rue du Faubourg-Montmartre in the 9th arrondissement. It also takes in the upper end of avenue de l'Opéra and rue du Quatre-Septembre.
This is a central shopping and theater district. Chouchou Hôtel on rue du Helder puts the Galeries Lafayette and Printemps department stores two minutes away on foot. The Palais Garnier, the Opéra-Comique and the Olympia music hall, open since 1893 at 28 boulevard des Capucines, are all in the area.
Further east, viewings at the Hôtel Drouot auction house are free and open to the public. On boulevard Montmartre, the Passage des Panoramas, opened in 1800 and the oldest covered shopping arcade in Paris, faces the Passage Jouffroy across the boulevard. The Musée Grévin wax museum is next to it.
The first Impressionist exhibition opened in April 1874 in the photographer Nadar's former studio at 35 boulevard des Capucines. Nothing of the studio remains.
Who the Opéra area suits
- Opera and concert audiences, who can walk to the Palais Garnier, the Opéra-Comique and the Olympia.
- Shoppers: the boulevard Haussmann department stores are a short walk from the hotels on rue du Helder and rue de Caumartin.
- Travelers flying from Orly: Métro line 14 runs directly to the airport from Pyramides, Madeleine and Saint-Lazare.
- Families: Kimpton St Honoré Paris lets children up to 18 stay free, and Hôtel Adèle & Jules, Hôtel Edouard 7 and Maison Athénée have family or connecting rooms.
Travelers who use a wheelchair should rule out Maison Athénée, which says it is not accessible to guests with motor disabilities. Hôtel Adèle & Jules and Kimpton St Honoré Paris give conflicting details about their adapted rooms, so confirm the room before booking.
Getting around: Métro, RER, airports and train stations
- Around the Palais Garnier: Opéra (lines 3, 7 and 8), linked underground to Auber (RER A), plus Chaussée d'Antin–La Fayette (lines 7 and 9) and Havre-Caumartin.
- Avenue de l'Opéra and rue du Quatre-Septembre: Pyramides (line 14) and Quatre-Septembre.
- The eastern streets: Grands Boulevards and Bonne Nouvelle (lines 8 and 9), Le Peletier and Cadet (line 7), and Richelieu-Drouot.
RER A runs from Auber directly to Châtelet–Les Halles, Gare de Lyon, La Défense and, on its Marne-la-Vallée–Chessy branch, Disneyland Paris.
For Orly airport, take Métro line 14, which has run directly to Aéroport d'Orly since June 2024. For Charles de Gaulle, take RER A one stop from Auber to Châtelet–Les Halles, then RER B toward Aéroport Charles-de-Gaulle. By car, Hôtel de Nell gives about 40 minutes from Charles de Gaulle and 35 to 45 minutes from Orly.
Gare Saint-Lazare is about 10 minutes on foot from InterContinental Paris Le Grand. Gare de l'Est is direct on line 7 from Opéra, Le Peletier and Cadet. For Gare du Nord, take RER E one stop from Haussmann–Saint-Lazare, which is linked underground to Auber, to Magenta.
The tradeoffs
Rooms at the four-star hotels can be small. The smallest rooms at Chouchou Hôtel and Maison Athénée measure 14 m², and the three smallest categories at Hôtel Adèle & Jules measure 15 to 18 m² with showers only.
The outlook changes from room to room. Classic rooms at Maison Athénée and Hôtel de Nell face inner courtyards, and La Fantaisie suggests a garden-facing room for a quieter stay. If street noise worries you, ask for the courtyard or garden side.
A view of the Palais Garnier comes only with the right room. Hôtel Edouard 7 sells Opéra View versions of most room categories, and InterContinental Paris Le Grand sells a Premium Room Opera View. Book the named category if the view matters.
Hôtel Adèle & Jules and La Maison Favart have no restaurant, and Hôtel de Nell lists a bar and room service but no restaurant. Chouchou Hôtel, Hôtel de Nell, Hôtel Edouard 7 and InterContinental Paris Le Grand have no car park, while Kimpton St Honoré Paris has paid parking.
Choosing a hotel near the Opéra
InterContinental Paris Le Grand, opened in 1862 as the Grand Hôtel, fills a whole block beside the Palais Garnier. With 458 rooms, the Café de la Paix, a spa and round-the-clock room service, it is the large-hotel choice. At 1 rue Scribe, the Hôtel Scribe now operates as the Sofitel Le Scribe Paris Opéra. In Down and Out in Paris and London (1933), George Orwell describes standing outside it for an hour hoping to be hired. He stayed there as a war correspondent in 1945.
- Kimpton St Honoré Paris: 149 rooms in a former department store on boulevard des Capucines, with a heated indoor pool and a rooftop bar. Despite the name, it is not on rue Saint-Honoré.
- Hôtel Hana: a small five-star hotel on rue du Quatre-Septembre, with a counter-current pool and French and Japanese cooking at its restaurant, Hanabi.
- Maison Albar - Le Vendôme: 51 rooms and suites on rue du Helder, with an indoor pool, a spa and a garden.
- La Fantaisie: 63 rooms and 10 suites on rue Cadet around a planted garden, with a rooftop bar and a spa of hot and cold baths.
Maison Athénée has 20 rooms on rue de Caumartin, decorated by Jacques Garcia on themes from four Italian operas. La Maison Favart has 39 rooms facing the Opéra-Comique, in a 1780s building where French police records place the painter Francisco Goya in 1824.
Hôtel Edouard 7, with 69 rooms on avenue de l'Opéra, suits families who need connecting rooms. Chouchou Hôtel, with 63 rooms on rue du Helder, serves breakfast, lunch and evening drinks under a glass roof.
Two hotels sit on quiet side streets to the east. Hôtel de Nell, a 33-room five-star hotel on rue du Conservatoire, faces the church of Saint-Eugène-Sainte-Cécile and is 10 to 15 minutes on foot from the Palais Garnier. Hôtel Adèle & Jules, a 60-room four-star hotel on a private lane off rue Bergère, serves free tea every afternoon.
